book club post

My book club group has talked about food and recipes from New Orleans and thought about making some food from there to share so the class could get a good taste of the culture shared and explained throughout the book.  I also thought about playing music and/or making a little pamphlet like a travel guide to New Orleans since this book seems a lot like one with all the lists of great places to eat and all the great things about New Orleans. I found this website which was interesting.

 http://www.neworleansonline.com/

It not only has great ideas for places to go but shares traditional foods of New Orleans and music and more. I thought it was wicked cool. I haven't checked out Adriann's site yet though so that one may be better for the food part. :)

blog- FW book

In the Feature Writing book it basically all talked about complications that can happen while writing and gave examples like placing someone in a certain light or the definition of libel. Libel is when you falsely write about someone that can result in affecting their reputation etc. It talked about fictionalizing factual information like swaying the truth too and I never knew there were so many ways. It also talked about invading peoples' private lives and displaying private information in their writing.

blog- nickel and dimed

Nickel and Dimed - Ehrenreich
The excerpt from Nickel and Dimed was when Ehrenreich was in Key West, Florida. The whole point is that she is trying to see if she can get by with low wage jobs and make it through the month. In Florida she gets a waitressing job that pays below minimum wage. For her home she rents a trailer but her money from waitressing isn't cutting it so she has to pick up a second job as a hotel maid. But then it's too much to handle because she's on her feet nonstop and works so much when the money isn't even good. She's gets way too over-exhausted so she quits her second job right away because she knows she can't do it and then she ends up quitting the waitressing job too before she's even been there for a whole month. She got really close to the other waitresses she met while doing this and learned about their lives too and how it's a real everyday struggle for them and they have no other money to fall back on like her. Many couldn't make enough for first and lasts rent so they would live out of their cars and stuff. It was sad because it was like a vicious cycle working their butts off just to get by and doing it over and over again never getting the chance to even save to ever become comfortable because it's all about just getting by.

book club!

I finished the book. I didn't really like it. BUT I guess it did make me want to go to New Orleans and it did explain to me why New Orleans matters (in the author's opinion). So, as much as I didn't like it- it did the job. I mainly just didn't like the rambling and the lists he'd say were informative but dragged on and on and I found myself skimming over them. I guess I just didn't care for the structure of the book but the information was good and effective to the thesis/point of the book.

talk of the town

im writing about "drunkorexics." the term is a mix between drunks and anorexics. mix the two together and you have a person who counts their calories saving them throughout the day for alcohol rather than food in order to be able to party hard but still maintain or lose weight. im gonna bring up how most of the people viewed as drunkorexics would be college girls. ill talk about why this could be like why they would fit under this category. also is it just about the college life or is this actually a disorder and dangerous?  also will talk about the skinny girl margarita and its kind of symbolic of a drunkorexic- an alcoholic beverage but low on calories so its all about maintaining your weight. could this aid a drunkorexic? is this a risky fad or an deadly epidemic?

book club

the beginning of the book seems organized the middle seems jumbled then the end seems organized again. could this be a hidden deeper symbol like for new orleans before the hurricane then the damage it did leaving it in disarray and then being put back together and back to its greatness? i dont think so. i personally dont feel the author is going that deep with this. i think he more just writes with train of thought process and not really deep thinking like this symbolic idea. also this fits into journalism because there needs to be relevance which there is because i still consider katrina and the  aftermath still relevant and also has to hold importance which i also think it does especially because its in our very own country and that also makes it pretty personal and it has to be about a who what when where and why and the author describes all of these throughout the book with all of his lists etc.

Book Club 2

The author of Why New Orleans Matters is pretty repetitive and the way he writes seems like it's his train of thought rather than thoughtfully organized. He describes new orleans as like some electric soup which was cool. It was a memorable and creative description. He also talks about how people in New Orleans actually wave and say hi compared to New Yorkers.. It's more of a beautiful jumble compared to New York's sharp tall buildings. New Orleans is filled with hole in the wall, amazing places to eat and listen to music.

final choice

I could interview a girl who had an abortion in high school.

I expect to show the affects it has had on her,
her reasoning behind her decision,
whether or not she regrets it,
her knowledge of sex at the time,
whether or not the father of the child had any say,
how she copes,
her relationship with the child’s father,
information on teen pregnancy,
abortion,
adoption,
and teen parenting.

Teenagers, young adults, and people of all ages can be drawn to this as well as anyone who has had an abortion, thought about it, or knows someone who has.

Subject

Thinking about doing it on the last person. Maybe doing it on her mom instead. Try to get her to confront and acknowledge her alcoholism and the affect it has had on not just her, but her family. Her body is much worse than it could be. Her relationships are much worse than they should be.

Possible Profiles

Possible Profiles:

1- Gary D: A drug dealer and addict. What led him to this life he leads? Is he trying to change it?

2- Suzie M: Had an abortion during high school. Why did she choose this route? What affects has it had on her? Negative? Positive?

3- Alan A: Blacked out from drinking and slapped his girlfriend twice. Does his culture have anything to do with it? Does he subconsciously not disapprove of abuse due to growing up around it with his parents because of his culture?

4- Keira H- Grew up with an alcoholic mother. How has this affected her life?
